Landmark on Robson
PDP London's Hong Kong Studio is appointed as concept and design architects for the redevelopment of the Empire Landmark site in downtown Vancouver, Canada.
This mixed use development consists of two residential towers and a commercial podium. The residential towers will be a mixture of affordable housing and market housing in an integrated community development. The team has developed a language of form and detail that is applied consistently across the whole scheme.
The Quiet Confidence of Understated Luxury
This unique location provides the inspiration for an architecture where the enjoyment of light and space, and an intimate connection to Vancouver’s iconic setting are fundamental to the building’s design.
In an elevated position with views over Coal Harbour, Stanley Park, English Bay and the downtown skyline the apartments are designed to provide unobstructed views over this incredible panorama. Large balconies designed as outdoor rooms cantilever a distance from the facade and open up the views even further than from the floor to ceiling glazing of the main living spaces. The balconies change plan orientation on alternate floors to further enhance the feeling of openness combined with shelter. In use, they complement the internal spaces with truly usable outdoor living area.
The appearance of the building itself is one of clean lines, elegant proportion and refined detail using high quality materials throughout.
The podium is designed as a three storey element to respect the existing rhythm and scale of retail on Robson street.
The commercial units are designed to match the prevailing width of small units on Robson Street to blend in with the city scape and to preserve the character of West End as a small to medium scale retail area.
A mid block open plaza provides seating areas for the adjacent retail units and is open to the public street. This break in the podium of the development coincides with a change in level in the commercial accommodation which together help the development blend in with the surrounding townscape.
The top of the podium is fully landscaped to provide amenity space for the residents. The different components are designed in a clean and contemporary aesthetic with a focus on refined detailing using high quality materials.
