Clesa Milk Factory Competition
A design competition was held for ideas to renovate the former Clesa Milk Factory in Madrid. PDP London’s proposed scheme, a centre for start-up companies, utilises the magnificent internal space of the factory and responds to growing demand in the city.
The design includes an agora, which identifies and responds to three major challenges of the competition which were:
- - to regenerate of the existing urban fabric to repair the deficiencies in the surrounding area
- - to maintain, preserve and enhance the architectural values latent in the factory, which is one of the first examples of modern architecture in Spain.
- - to find a suitable programme for Clesa which responds to the demands of the city.
The scheme includes a translucent façade, which aims to integrate the existing factory in a new context. It also creates a new public space that combines the factory, two new buildings, a new hotel and a future residential development. The aim is to create an agora that acts as a calming oasis within the busy urban environment which revives this part of the city and creates a prosperous future for the area.
