Dovehouse Street Extra Care Home
Planning has been granted for this high-end development which blends luxury residential units with extra-care facilities in the heart of Chelsea.
The proposed luxury development will provide 55 high-quality extra-care units which cater for elderly residents, whilst also significantly improving the relationship with the local context, repairing the townscape and enhancing the public realm.
The focus is on providing as much independence as possible for the residents, whilst creating an environment which encourages privacy, support and companionship. The residential units range from 54sqm to 195sqm and comply with minimum internal space standards outlined in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s ‘Older People’s Housing Design Guidance’. Each unit is self-contained but is supported by private health care communal facilities including a hydro-therapy facility, spa, gym and library, together with rehabilitation rooms, café and accessible private garden space.
The site itself is surrounded by an eclectic mix of building typologies, massing and scale and it was an essential part of the design process to acknowledge and understand this diverse mix, in order to sensitively address and respectfully integrate with the existing urban fabric. Particular importance was placed on improving the sense of enclosure of Dovehouse Green, a public space fronting King’s Road, allowing a greatly improved spatial experience for everyone.
