Empire Landmark Redevelopment
PDP London's Hong Kong Studio is appointed as concept and design architects for the redevelopment of the Empire Landmark site in downtown Vancouver, Canada.
The 42 storey Empire Landmark hotel will make place for a 3 storey podium with retail, offices and a midblock open plaza facing the public street and non market housing facing on to a residential lane. Two residential towers of up to 30 storeys are linked by amenity spaces and a landscaped deck on the podium. The podium element is capped by a feature profile. The towers have a clear horizontal articulation in the emphasis of the slab edge at every floor by means of a curved profile projecting feature. Large projecting balconies are located at the four corners of each tower alternating in orientation on every floor. This alternating plan of the balconies allows part of each to have double storey clearance and so admits additional light to the balconies themselves and into the plan of the unit. It also creates a modulating rhythm to the façade. The projecting floor edge profile extends to the balconies to further articulate the façade. Floor to ceiling glazing allows for unobstructed views over the Vancouver bay area.
